Creating Payroll Variance Reports with Oracle Discoverer

Creating the Pay Variance Report
Once the new folder has been created and joined in Discoverer Administrator we can create the Pay Variance report using Discoverer Desktop.
Even though I am using Discoverer Desktop, Discoverer Plus can also create the following report.
Create the Workbook
Once you have logged into Oracle Discoverer, follow the workbook wizard to create a new report.
Step 1 – Choose “Create a new workbook” and choose to create a “Table” and click “Next”.

Step 2 – Add fields from both the Pay folder and the Pay – Outer Join folder and click “Finish”.

Create the Parameters
The best way to choose what periods to compare is to create two parameters:
- Pay Period 1 – The chosen pay period from the table Pay
- Pay Period 2 – The chosen pay period from the table Pay – Outer Join
Click Tools -> Parameter and click “New”

Parameter 1 – Create the parameter based on Pay.Pay Period and create a condition using “=” and click “OK”

Parameter 2 – Create the parameter based on Pay – Outer Join.Pay Period and create a condition using “=” and click “OK”

Once you have created the two parameters click “OK”

Now that there are parameters in the report, anytime you refresh the data, you will be prompted to enter the pay periods you want to compare. Enter the Pay Periods and click “Finish”

The report will now show two pay periods next to each other

Further Enhancement Ideas
Once you have created the basic Pay Variance report, you can add other features;
- Add the field “Name” to the report
- Change the formatting on all currency values to $0.00 format
- Add a new calculation showing the difference between the amount in the two periods
- Highlight differences over a certain amount to be a different colour
- Rename the columns

Companies will outsource their payroll services to businesses which specialize in payroll, leaving you more time to focus on your core service.
